Infusion Therapy
Ketamine infusions are a growing trend in the medical and mental health world for their potential to provide relief from a variety of physical and mental health issues. As a schedule III controlled substance, ketamine has been used safely and effectively by doctors for decades in the operating room and in emergency rooms. More recently, ketamine infusions have been used to help manage chronic pain, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The drug works by blocking the brain’s N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which is involved in learning and memory, and by boosting the neurotransmitter glutamate, which plays a role in learning and cognition. This helps to reduce pain and improve mood. In addition, ketamine infusions are beneficial because they are much faster acting than traditional medications and can provide relief within a few hours or days. This is especially beneficial for those with chronic pain or mental health issues who are looking for long-term relief.
Evaluation
The evaluation process for ketamine infusion therapy is a comprehensive one that takes into account your medical history, lifestyle, and current conditions. If deemed appropriate for ketamine infusion therapy, our physician will also order lab tests and further assessments to ensure that you are an appropriate candidate for the treatment. Once the evaluation is complete, the physician will discuss the risks and benefits of the treatment with you and, if deemed necessary, will refer you to a mental health specialist for better support during integration. Following the evaluation, the physician will discuss the treatment plan and provide instructions on how the ketamine infusion will be administered.
Administration
Ketamine therapy is administered in a safe and comfortable environment. Patients are typically seated in a chair and given a blanket for comfort. The environment is designed to be calming, with soft music playing in the background and dim lighting. The room is also equipped with an oxygen tank and a monitor to monitor the patient’s vital signs. The healthcare provider administering the ketamine therapy is also present and will monitor the patient throughout the treatment. All of these measures are taken to ensure the patient’s safety and comfort while they receive the therapy.
Integration
Integration after ketamine infusions is an important part of the healing process. Integration is the process of integrating the new insights and understanding gained from the experience into a person's everyday life. It is a process of self-exploration and reflection about the experience, in order to gain the most insight and benefit from it. This can be done through journaling, talking with friends and family, therapy, and in some cases, medication management. Through integration, individuals can come to a greater understanding of themselves and their current situation, leading to improved mental and emotional well-being.
